School holiday programme

During the school holidays we run workshops for young people interested in developing their creative knowledge outside of the classroom. The workshops are intended for students interested in pursuing art in their education, and are suitable for ages 9 to 18. Space is strictly limited and group sizes will be no more than eight, allowing the tutor and student to build a personal and fulfilling interaction, based on the needs of each individual. Each week will begin with a visit to a London gallery, and the holidays will end with an exhibition at Studio 106.

Space, Colour, Light and Time for 9–12 years

SPACE, COLOUR, LIGHT AND TIME FOR 9–12 YEARS

Experimenting with the ethereal effects that can be created by light and movement, students will create installations and large-scale experimental drawings in the gallery. This course is designed to develop technical and experimental skills in an exciting and investigative environment. Working from their initial drawings and photographs, students will create complex images and installations by layering translucent materials, considering new ways of working with line, colour and three-dimensional form.

Art Summer School for 11–15 years

ART SUMMER SCHOOL FOR 11–15 YEARS

This course is designed for students with a passion for art, interested in developing their technical skills and building their confidence with experimental process and idea-generation. Taught by highly experienced tutors familiar with the GCSE and A Level syllabus, the course will cover a range of both two and three dimensional materials and processes. The week will begin with a gallery visit and we will focus initially on observational drawing, looking at mark-making and still life. Introducing paint, collage and 3D materials, we will generate a series of paintings, mixed media works and sculpture. Work produced will be exhibited in the gallery at the end of the course, and students will leave with a series of new works and a sketchbook full of creative ideas.

Preparation for Art in Further and Higher Education 13–18 years

PREPARATION FOR ART IN FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION 13–18 YEARS

This course is aimed at students considering pursuing study in creative disciplines at Further and Higher Education levels. Taught by tutors with significant experience teaching in Art Schools, this course will help you to develop a range of important practical and conceptual skills. The holiday course is specifically designed to develop knowledge of history and theory of art in relation to student’s own practice. It will begin with a visit to the Tate Britain, during which we will gather inspiration that will form the starting point for the weeks’ work. Tutors will set projects tailored to each individual and designed to generate work for a strong portfolio. Students will be encouraged to develop drawing skills and to work with a wide range of both two and three-dimensional materials.

Redrawing the History of Art for 11–18 years

REDRAWING THE HISTORY OF ART FOR 11–18 YEARS

Starting with a visit to the National Gallery, students will study and gather images to explore and develop during the week. Using these historical works as a starting point, we will use a wide variety of media to explore modes of image making. As the week progresses, students will appropriate chosen images and themes to their own ends through mediation and re-working. Work will be developed through an entertaining and experimental process and students will produce a series of contemporary drawings and paintings that will be exhibited in the gallery at the end of the week.
